The Issue

I am a student at Broome-Tioga BOCES, and the recent decisions regarding our learning facilities have left me feeling deeply upset. Our old building, which served as a cornerstone for our agricultural science program, is being removed, leaving us with inadequate space to learn effectively or even house the animals essential to our curriculum. The situation is dire—so much so that multiple students have been forced to quit the program because we simply do not have the room necessary to engage in meaningful, hands-on agricultural education.

The agricultural science program at Broome-Tioga BOCES is integral to students in Binghamton, NY, and the surrounding areas who wish to pursue careers in this essential sector. However, crowded classrooms and limited space for animal housing severely restrict our learning potential and undermine educational outcomes. Without appropriate facilities, students are missing out on crucial practical experiences that are vital for our future success in the field.

Agriculture is the backbone of our nation, and for students like us, learning in an environment that supports our educational and hands-on needs is not just beneficial; it is necessary. A proper learning environment fosters engagement, stimulates passion, and enhances our understanding of agricultural sciences. Unfortunately, the current conditions are falling short.

The decision to give us a smaller space  and not expand our facilities will have long-term impacts not only on current students but on future generations aspiring to enter the agricultural sector. Our educational system must take action to prioritize and invest in creating a more expansive and resource-equipped learning space.

A viable solution involves reallocating resources toward the development of a new building equipped with the necessary infrastructure to support agricultural science education. This development should include ample space for classrooms, grooming, cat room ,and areas for animal housing, enabling us to maximize our hands-on learning opportunities.

We urge the administration at Broome-Tioga BOCES to reconsider their current plans and invest in the future of agriculture education by expanding our learning facilities. Sign this petition to show your support for an enhancement of educational spaces dedicated to empowering agricultural science students in Binghamton. Together, we can make a difference.

Responded
We reached out to BOCES to express our concern over the petition that was shared with my office. BT-BOCES has assured us that come this Fall, the program's new space will have all of the same opportunities and programing they have in their current space, as well as brand new equipment and furniture.
