The Issue

Living in Bay Farm, Alameda, and commuting to San Francisco frequently, the ferry services are a convenient and efficient way to travel during the week, however the lack of weekend service means that option not available for family and social trips to San Francisco over the weekend.

Harbor Bay ferry operates only on weekdays during peak commute hours, which is beneficial for work travel but limits weekend excursions. The introduction of weekend ferry services could transform our weekends, promoting sustainable travel and reducing the region's traffic congestion.

The City of Alameda and the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) have the capacity to make this change, and studies show urban residents increasingly prefer public transit when it is designed to be convenient and accessible throughout the week.

To move forward, we propose a pilot program for weekend ferry services. This trial could begin with a limited number of sailings, allowing WETA to gather data and assess demand without a large initial cost. Given our community's eco-conscious mindset and growing interest in reducing carbon footprint, increasing ferry service is a logical step.

We urge local authorities to consider the multitude of benefits this change can bring. Expanding the Harbor Bay ferry services to include weekends can foster community well-being, stimulate local economies, and enhance our quality of life by providing efficient, reliable, and sustainable travel options.

Please sign this petition to extend ferry services from Harbor Bay to San Francisco to include the weekend, ensuring everyone in Alameda has access to a greener, hassle-free travel option.
