The Issue

Our community prides itself in the open, green spaces we enjoy. Yet, we now confront a situation that would transform a part our beloved Bark Haven dog park into a concrete parking lot for a nearby high school. The charm of our environment, the cohesion of our community, the places where our pets can freely roam — all are at stake should this unnecessary construction proceed.

As a member of this community, I can testify to the positive atmosphere the dog park brings. It's not just a place for pets. It's a gathering point for friendships to form, for conversations to take place, and for the sense of belonging to be fostered. In contrast, the proposed parking lot will serve a handful of people ─ students who would still take a shuttle to school, thus rendering the whole construction useless.

Environmentally, the cost is also too great. Parks can help cities achieve many environmental objectives, including clean air and water, stormwater management, and increased biodiversity, to name just a few. Swapping our dog park's grass for a parking lot's cement would be a huge detriment to our urban ecosystem.

Our plea is not just about maintaining a space for our dogs to roam freely. It's about retaining the character and integrity of our community. It's about emphasizing the importance of our natural spaces over unnecessary development. We ask for your support in urging local authorities to halt plans for a parking lot and instead expand our beloved Bark Haven Dog Park. Please sign this petition and let our voices be heard.
