Expand and Save the Busselton Jetty Marine Sanctuary

The issue

The Busselton Jetty is a world-renowned marine sanctuary.  The jetty provides visitors with a unique opportunity to have a glimpse into the underwater world!  The vibrant soft corals and sponges growing on the jetty’s pylons attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

It is home to a great abundance and diversity of marine species.  Marine mammals like dolphins, small sharks and rays, octopus, squid, and a plethora of other fish call the Busselton Jetty home.

But the marine sanctuary encompasses only about the last 150 meters of the Busselton Jetty, and overfishing is evident here.

Our goal is to encourage the powers that be to more thoroughly police illegal fishing in the marine sanctuary and even to expand the marine sanctuary beyond the diving platform.

Expanding the marine sanctuary beyond the diving platform will provide a greater area of healthy artificial reef for visitors to enjoy.  It would also make diving the Busselton Jetty a lot more safe, because divers getting hooked by fishing lines has been a problem.
