Expand Agricultural Education in Western Australian Secondary Schools

The issue

The anguish of having to send a 12-year-old son away from home to receive adequate education is heart-wrenching. Not because there is no quality education system in place, but because the current curriculum is restricted and lacks options for children like him, who simply are not built for conventional classroom learning. In Collie, Western Australia, there are no vocational training options for children in Years 6 to 12 at agricultural secondary schools. This is a shortcoming that my son, among others, has been a victim of.

In this modern era where we strive for inclusivity and comprehensive education, the Department of Education, Western Australia should consider that not every child is designed for traditional classroom learning. Some kids thrive in alternative learning environments such as an agricultural setting where they can learn practical and vocational skills.

It's important to consider, a study from the University of Eastern Finland suggests that agricultural education promotes diverse skills and positive attitudes towards farming. It not only creates a productive work-force but also fosters responsible citizens Mindful about their environmental footprint.

Therefore, we call upon the Department of Education, Western Australia to broaden the horizons of education and open Agricultural secondary education to all eligible secondary students from years 6 to 12. By doing this, we will not only enrich our local communities but also contribute to the sustainable future of Australia. It's high time we brought about this change. Please sign this petition.
