Expand Acceptable Forms of Voter Identification Beyond Photo ID

The Issue

I am personally affected by the new law requiring photo ID to vote. This law removes the ability for poorer people, who cannot afford a passport or driver's license, to exercise their hard-won right to vote. A passport or driver's license costs around 50 pounds - that's about five hours of work for many people. Furthermore, those who work shifts are unable to request a voter registration card as all ways to request them are closed during night and full day shifts.

This issue goes beyond my personal experience; it affects countless citizens across our nation who face similar circumstances. The Electoral Commission reported in 2015 that approximately 3.5 million citizens do not have access to photo ID in the UK (source: Electoral Commission). This means that these millions of individuals could potentially be disenfranchised due to this new requirement.

We need a more inclusive approach towards voter identification, one which allows alternative forms of proof like bank cards and polling cards. Voting is an essential democratic right; no citizen should be denied their voice due to financial constraints or working hours.

Let us ensure everyone has equal access and opportunity at the ballot box by expanding acceptable forms of voter identification beyond just photo IDs. Please sign this petition today and help uphold our democratic principles.
