Exonerate Carroll Gaylord

Exonerate Carroll Gaylord
The Issue
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the conviction of Carroll Gaylord. He has been wrongfully convicted of a crime of which he has not committed. Many African Americans have been convicted of crimes of which they have not committed due to not being able to afford representation, prosecutorial misconduct and biased juries (The Sentencing Project, 2024). Carroll has been confined for over 16 years. He has been wrongfully convicted and harshly sentenced to double life plus 20 years. Unthinkable! What is the color of justice? Statistics demonstrate that a black male is 5 times more likely to be incarcerated and more harshly punished than a white male convicted of the same (Win with Justice, 2024, Sentencing Project, 2021). In 2017-2018, "data from the Baltimore City Police Department reported that 83% of all arrests involved a Black suspect. Eighty-eight percent of all Circuit Court cases involved a Black defendant while only 9 % involved a white defendant," (Baltimore City State's Attorney Office, 2022). The sentencing imposed on Mr. Gaylord, is one based on bias, false testimony, malicious lies, misconduct, and nothing short of corruption in the legal system. He is due a just and fair trial, one that weighs all evidence without bias. Today Carrol wants to overturn his conviction by motion to the courts for a new trial, without prejudice. He also wants to correct the illegal sentencing imposed on him. Research shows that incarcerating inmates for longer than 10 years does more harm than good and the monies used to confine the inmates should be used to rehabilitate and not warehouse (Maryland Equitable Justice Collaborative, 2023). Will you stand with me in support of Carroll Gaylord's Exoneration? You can demonstrate your support by signing this petition, as a plea to the Circuit Court in Baltimore, Maryland's Governor, Wes Moore, and Anthony Brown, Attorney General for Maryland to grant Carroll the civil liberty to prove his innocence. It does take an entire village to bring change and healing. Accountability is foundational to progress. History has a way of repeating itself if there is no real progress and or steadfast commitment toward legislative reform of outdated policies that don't work. If it can happen to Carroll Gaylord, it can happen to any of our sons, daughters, and or loved ones. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. In the famous words of Martin Luther King Jr., "Now is the Time." Support Mr. Gaylord today by signing this petition in support of his exoneration. Together we can because nothing changes unless we do!
