Exempt Linux and BSDs from age verification laws

Exempt Linux and BSDs from age verification laws
The Issue
I am creating this petition to address the pressing issue concerning California's AB 1043 and similar laws in other U.S. states, such as Colorado, Illinois, and New York, that require age verification for accessing online content. As a fervent advocate for open-source software, I find myself deeply concerned about the vague nature of this law, which fails to appropriately distinguish between Linux and BSD operating systems and the proprietary operating systems from big corporations like Apple, Google, and Microsoft.
Open-source operating systems like Linux (e.g. Arch Linux), and the BSDs, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD, play a crucial role in the technology ecosystem, offering alternatives that prioritize privacy, security, and user empowerment. These platforms are often developed and maintained by passionate individuals and communities rather than large corporations with limitless resources. Mandating age verification unnecessarily burdens these smaller, non-commercial projects and hinders their growth and accessibility.
The legislation was primarily intended to regulate content from large corporations to protect minors from harmful digital content. However, the vagueness of the wording inadvertently encapsulates open-source platforms that contribute significantly to technological advancement and digital inclusion. Restrictive laws like this stunt innovation and could potentially lead to a decline in the diversity of available operating systems, thereby reducing user choice.
By exempting Linux and the BSDs from these laws, we preserve the ethos of the open-source community and ensure that individuals have continuous access to systems that promote educational growth and digital freedom. Furthermore, DIY Linux distributions are vital for hobbyists, educators, and students exploring computer science without barriers.
This petition urges lawmakers to amend existing legislation to explicitly exclude Linux, the BSDs, and DIY Linux distributions from age verification requirements. By taking this action, policymakers can demonstrate a commitment to upholding digital rights and embracing innovation without compromising on child safety strategies.
Also, we must ensure that the lawmakers listen to us, as the law affects Linux worldwide.
Join me in this movement to safeguard the future of open-source technology by signing this petition. Your support will urge lawmakers to recognize the unique role that these platforms play in our digital world. Let's ensure an open, inclusive, and innovative digital future for all.
