Exempt Individuals Earning Less Than $150,000 Annually from Taxes

The Issue

The growing wealth gap in our community has a personal and detrimental consequence. Despite a tireless work ethic, families and individuals in our midst continually find themselves struggling financially. Living paycheck to paycheck is the grim reality for too many. The vast disparity between the cost of living and what they earn is aggravating this divide, further straining the capacity of families to meet basic needs.

Our taxation system, as it currently stands, adds insult to the injury. It is senseless to impose tax burdens on households barely making ends meet. It is against this backdrop that we propose a transformation in our approach to taxation—specifically, an exemption for those earning less than $150,000 per year from paying taxes.

Forecasts from the Tax Policy Center reveal that the bottom 50% of earners pay roughly 3% of all federal taxes (taxes that include income, payroll, corporate, excise, estate and gift taxes). Yet even this 'modest' percentage significantly cuts into the earnings of lower-income households struggling to afford essentials.

Through making incomes under $150,000 tax-exempt, we hope to alleviate a portion of the financial burden and help close the growing wealth gap. This is not merely an act of momentarily respite; it is about putting equitable measures in place that underline the urgency to respect and protect the financial wellbeing of all members of the community.

What we are promoting is fundamental to fairness. Stand with us in demanding an overhaul of the current tax system. Sign this petition and echo our call for fair taxation. Together, we can help alleviate the financial stress on struggling families and individuals, and in so doing, create a healthier, more just society.
