Exempt Registered Veterinary Technicians from California's Lunch Law

The Issue

As a dedicated veterinary professional, I am responsible for the well-being of countless innocent lives every day. From assisting with emergencies to caring for sick fur babies and conducting wellness exams, my focus is always on providing the best possible care. However, the California lunch law currently requires me to take a meal break, regardless of my patient's needs, five hours after my start time, disrupting continuity of care.

Veterinarians are already exempt from this law due to their critical role in safeguarding animal lives. Like them, veterinary technicians are also integral in ensuring that our furry friends receive timely and uninterrupted care. Yet we are not granted the same exemption.

Continuity of care is an extremely important part of my job. While it is the doctor's job to diagnose and decide on a treatment plan for the patient, it is my responsibility as a technician to run bloodwork, monitor vital signs, administer medications, and provide comfort and care for these beautiful beings. Please help me have the ability to care for my patient, in their time of need, from beginning to end.

The current lunch law does not consider that emergency situations can arise at any moment in our field - situations where minutes can make all the difference between life or death.

Therefore, we urge lawmakers in California to extend this exemption to all veterinary professionals who play such an essential role in maintaining animal health and welfare across our state. Let us focus on what truly matters - saving lives - without having to watch the clock.

Please sign this petition if you believe that all veterinary professionals should be exempt from California's lunch law so they can continue providing uninterrupted quality care for our beloved animals.
