Even before we have been designated as an "opportunity area" in the new London Plan, developers are already working with our council to triple the number of homes on the Cambridge Road council estate in Norbiton, the majority of which will be for sale at a high value, out of the reach of many local people
Under current plans, the estate will be demolished and with it many mature trees felled which provide shelter for wildlife and help keep our air clean. This increased density will come with no transport improvements and despite the fact that the estate currently has poor transport accessibility. This is one of the first "regeneration" projects that will happen in a band across Kingston, Norbiton and New Malden
Tenants and homeowners alike will face displacement and may never be able to return to their homes. And this on a site where the properties are all structurally sound so they really don't need to face the sledgehammer
It is a council estate now. Who will it be next?
Our council is committing to build 55000 homes over 22 years. Last night, a council officer admitted that we are building homes for many many more people than our projected population increase demands. We have a maximum forecast population increase of 34,000 people, yet we are going to provide housing for 135,000. This not right - we were never asked.
It can't be for nothing they gave officers recently the power to negotiate to buy up property with an individual value of up to £1 million
Next, it could be you, or me
We are all in this together and we need to stop it now
Please read Phil's petition and consider opposing the council's plans to completely redevelop the Cambridge Road Estate
