Protecting the Earth's Habitability

The Issue

We, teacher candidates at Mount Saint Mary College, are urging action to be taken against the alarming destruction and exhaustion of the Earth. Before graduation in the year 2017, actions by us with help from our colleagues here at Mount Saint Mary College, will be taken on the following issues. As future teachers we have the ability to encourage a generation to change the current trends and preserve what little natural resources exist. As a final project of the Science Methods class we were introduced to the powerful movie “Home” which ignited concern and called us into action.

Earth was formed about 7 billion years ago. Everything that is within the Earth’s atmosphere is linked, which creates an equilibrium. Everyone makes a difference in the changes that occur in the world. Earth’s population has tripled over the years and is causing disturbances within the ecosystem, world, and even the universe.  If the Earth becomes damaged, other components of the universe will be damaged as well, because everything is linked. As a whole, we can change these occurrences that are currently happening in the world. These are the main concerns and the seven step action plan to address them:

In a single lifetime Earth has been more radically changed than by all previous generations of humanity. 20% of the world's
population consumes 80% of its resources. In the last 50 years we have eliminated nearly 4 billion years of work and creation.

The Sun is an inexhaustible source of energy that should be used rather than the plants on the Earth.
“Water shortages could affect nearly two billion people before 2025.” Life affects water and water affects life - Therefore we are killing each other.
Increasing human impact is leading to exhaustion of the Earth’s resources at an alarming rate.

While these issues are global, each of us can take action on a local level. These are our commitments as teachers to join and call others to the global movement for protecting the Earth’s habitability.

Action Plan:
1. Spread awareness among students and parents within the classroom and community.
2. Create/ join an organization, such as one of these that works to help the environment, and encourage students to join.
3. Have the students sign our petition on Change.org
4. Organize “ Clean up the Earth Day” by cleaning parks and beaches in the community.
5. We can plant a garden as a class and teach students the dangers of pesticides.
6. Encourage recycling in the classroom by having a separate garbage cans for recyclables only.
7. Teach about environment, environmental conservation efforts and encourage students to ask parents to carpool, or walk to stores instead of driving.
