Evacuate! "Voice for Eritrean refugees in Sudan and Ethiopia”
The Issue
Petition to the Government of Canada and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada:
As Canadians of Eritrean origin residing in Canada, we implore the Canadian Government and Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to take immediate action.
We appreciate the temporary measures for Sudanese nationals in Canada and the announcement of prioritizing the processing of applications from those who are still in Sudan.
The situation in Sudan is constantly evolving, and movement within the country continues to be difficult and dangerous thus Eritrean refugees are in a dire situation. Recognizing the real and imminent danger that these individuals face, we urge immediate attention to the following critical points:
· Evacuate holders of ‘Confirmation of Permanent Resident’ (CoPR) inclusively with Canadians and Permanent Residents
· Negotiate with the Ethiopian Government to give exit to those who are holders of ‘Confirmation of Permanent Resident’ (CoPR) but unregistered asylum seekers inside Ethiopia.
· Negotiate with the Ethiopian Government to start registering asylum seekers and recognize them as a refugee.
· Exempt the displaced refugee from providing a new Refugee Status Determination (RSD) from the current location to continue/finalize their active process to Canada.
· Allow groups of five and community sponsors in Canada to sponsor Eritrean refugees without having to submit a refugee status determination (RSD) document.
Thus, we, the undersigned, bring to your attention the dreadful situation faced by Eritrean refugees in Sudan and Ethiopia. With over 300,000 individuals in Sudan and approximately 130,000 in Ethiopia, these refugees are enduring unimaginable hardships within the confines of overcrowded and under-resourced camps. They find themselves trapped during conflicts between governments and rebel factions, living in a constant state of instability and insecurity.
The conditions in these camps are beyond harsh; they are unforgiving. Eritrean refugees struggle daily to survive, facing scarcity of resources, limited access to healthcare, and inadequate shelter. The absence of peace and stability in the region has only worsened their plight, exposing them to high-security risks and diminishing any hope they have left.
We, the concerned citizens of Canada, urge you to consider our plea seriously. Time is of the essence, and decisive action is required. Together, let us demonstrate compassion, empathy, and solidarity toward those in desperate need, Eritrean refugees.
Message to ERITREANS IN CANADA
It is crucial that we, as proud Canadians, hold our government accountable and encourage it to fulfill its humanitarian obligations. We appeal to you to adopt an inclusive approach to evacuation efforts, ensuring that all communities in need receive the necessary assistance they require.
Let us not underestimate the power of our voices. We understand that a vote is a potent tool capable of effecting change far greater than any bullet. We implore the Canadian government to acknowledge the urgency of this situation and act swiftly to save the lives of Eritrean refugees in Sudan and Ethiopia. The well-being and safety of these individuals should be a top priority, and Canada can showcase its commitment to humanitarian principles and values by extending a helping hand to our Eritrean brothers and sisters.
