Help Us Pass Alex’s Law: Protect Connecticut Tow Truck Operators

My name is Chrissy, and I am the bonus grandmother of Alexander John Ramos.

On Tuesday night, my grandson and brother of my beautiful granddaughters went to work as a tow truck operator in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

He never came home.

Our family is living through a pain that I cannot adequately put into words. I am heartbroken, angry, overwhelmed and still trying to understand how someone can simply go to work to help others and lose his life doing his job.

But in the middle of my grief, I know one thing:

Alex’s death has to mean something. Something has to change.

I am starting this petition to ask the State of Connecticut and the Connecticut General Assembly to create and pass The Alexander John Ramos Tow Operator Safety Act — “Alex’s Law.”

Tow truck operators work on the side of busy roads every day, often only feet away from moving vehicles. They respond to crashes, disabled vehicles and stranded motorists. When we need them, they show up.

We need to do more to protect them when they show up for us.

Through Alex’s Law, I am asking Connecticut lawmakers to consider stronger protections including:

Requiring essential towing and recovery controls on both the left and right sides of tow trucks, wherever technically feasible, allowing operators to work from the side farthest away from traffic.
Creating a stronger, more recognizable emergency warning-light system for tow trucks actively working roadside incidents, including consideration of red, white, amber and/or other highly visible combinations.
Strengthening public awareness and enforcement of Connecticut’s Slow Down, Move Over protections for tow operators.
Bringing tow operators, law enforcement, DMV, DOT, equipment manufacturers, roadway-safety experts and affected families together to identify additional changes that can save lives.
I am not a legislator.

I am not a traffic engineer.

I am Alex’s grandmother.

And I am asking the people who have the power and expertise to make these changes to sit down with us and find a better way to protect these men and women.

I cannot bring my grandson home.

But if speaking his name, telling his story and fighting for change can help another tow operator make it home after their shift, then I will fight.

Alexander John Ramos mattered.

His life mattered. His work mattered. And his death should not simply become another roadside statistic.
