September 11, 2001, is a date forever ingrained in the American consciousness.  This date is of immense significance to the American people and indeed the world - a day when approximately 3,000 innocent lives were tragically lost in the terrorist attacks in 2001 on American soil.  Other notable days of remembrance, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, have been recognized as federal holidays to pay tribute to individuals who have sacrificed for our nation.   Recognizing this date as a federal holiday would serve not only as a day of remembrance and tribute to those who perished but also an important opportunity to educate current and future generations about the events that unfolded on that day.
