The Issue

For many of us in downtown Toronto, HTO Beach is more than just a stretch of sand; it’s a vital part of our lives and an essential space for recreation and community. As residents of Toronto, our access to clean and safe water at HTO Beach is not only a privilege but a necessity—particularly for those of us with disabilities, for whom travel to distant beaches is not viable. HTO Beach is unique in being the only beach in Toronto equipped with an access ramp that extends all the way to the water, making it the most accessible option for individuals with mobility challenges.

Currently, the waters at HTO Beach are clean and safe, passing all necessary tests to ensure it remains a suitable spot for swimming and paddling. However, the presence of motorboats in this area poses a significant threat to our safety. Swimmers and paddlers, especially those with disabilities, who utilize this space are at risk, as they face challenges traveling longer distances to find an alternative spot.

We are advocating for the establishment of a motorboat exclusion zone around HTO Beach. This zone will ensure the safety and enjoyment of everyone using the beach, particularly vulnerable groups who cannot easily access other swimming areas. By creating a buffer zone free from motorized watercraft, we can guarantee a safe, clean, and enjoyable environment right in the heart of downtown Toronto, echoing the safe swimming conditions we once had at Ontario Place before it was privatized.

By implementing this restriction, the city will be preserving HTO Beach as a sanctuary for all Torontonians to enjoy. It will reaffirm our city's commitment to inclusivity and community, ensuring those with disabilities can continue to enjoy the pleasures of swimming and paddling without fear. This petition calls on local authorities to prioritize the safety of all beachgoers by taking swift action to designate HTO Beach as a motorboat-free zone.

Join us in this important initiative. Let’s work together to ensure HTO Beach remains a haven of safety and accessibility. Sign this petition and make a difference in the lives of many residents in downtown Toronto.
