Establish May as "Veterans Remembrance Month"

The Issue

As a compassionate citizen and someone deeply moved by the plight of veterans on our streets, I feel a strong need to address their untold struggles. The haunting sight of those who once bravely served our country, now wrestling with mental health issues and substance abuse, is one that fills me with a resolve for change. They epitomize the people who preserved the freedoms we sometimes take for granted, and it's heartbreaking to see them in such a state.

May, a month teeming with warmth before the onset of summer, must be dedicated as the "Veterans Remembrance Month". This would not only honor their service but also raise awareness about their needs and challenges. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, as of 2020, an estimated 37,252 veterans are homeless on any given night. Moreover, according to a study published in 2016 in JAMA Psychiatry, nearly one in four active-duty service members showed signs of a mental health condition.

Our aim must be to cast light on these figures, stir national conversation, and foster an environment that urges a call to action. Through "Veterans Remembrance Month", we can weave a nationwide network of support, and educate about the resources needed to eradicate homelessness and untreated mental issues amongst our veterans.

We owe our veterans the respect and assistance they deserve in recognition of their sacrifice and dedication. Let us stand together for this cause. Please sign this petition to establish May as "Veterans Remembrance Month". Let's remember, honor, and support those who have served and preserved our freedoms.
