The Issue

The Cape Fear coastal areas in North Carolina are ecological treasures that are home to diverse marine life, including endangered species like various sharks, sea turtles and marine mammals. These habitats provide crucial breeding grounds, nurseries, and feeding areas for countless marine species and are integral to both local biodiversity and the economic livelihood of communities through tourism and fishing industries.

Unfortunately, these areas are under threat from increasing pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction. Studies have shown that unprotected marine environments risk losing their biodiversity at an alarming rate, with significant consequences for the health of our planet's oceans. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), over 80% of fisheries worldwide are fully exploited, overexploited, or collapsed, underscoring the urgent need for protective measures.

Creating Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Cape Fear coastal region will safeguard these critical ecological zones by restricting activities that cause harm, hence allowing ecosystems to recover and thrive. MPAs have proven effective in preserving biodiversity, replenishing fish stocks, and maintaining clean waters.

To make this vision a reality, we call upon the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries and local authorities to designate the Cape Fear coastal areas as Marine Protected Areas. This action will not only preserve the unique marine habitats but will also secure sustainable growth for future generations.

Sign this petition to urge policymakers to protect our precious marine ecosystems and support the establishment of Cape Fear coastal areas as Marine Protected Areas. Together, we can ensure a thriving maritime environment for generations to come.
