Establish Lunar New Year as an Official Holiday in Woodbridge

Establish Lunar New Year as an Official Holiday in Woodbridge
The Issue
As Asian Americans living in Woodbridge, CT, we have always cherished the Lunar New Year. It's a time when our families honor our heritage, celebrate our culture, and feel connected to our roots. Yet, this significant event is not officially recognized as a holiday in our town. As students, we believe that this event should allow us adequate time away from school to celebrate this important holiday with our families.
Lunar New Year is not just another day on the calendar; it's a celebration that holds deep cultural significance for millions of people worldwide. According to the Pew Research Center, Asian Americans are the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in the U.S., with more than 20 million residing here as of 2019. In Woodbridge, out of the 9,000 residents, over 9.8% of them are Asian Americans. This issue is personal to many of our residents.
In addition to formally recognizing Lunar New Year as an official holiday, it is imperative that public schools do not punish students who choose to take the time off to celebrate the holiday with their family. This decision not only signifies the department's deep respect for the cultural significance of the holiday but also demonstrates a commitment to honoring and supporting those who celebrate it. Most notably, giving students the choice to leave school for Lunar New Year allows students in the district to fully immerse themselves in their cultural heritage. Lunar New Year is a time for families and communities to unite, celebrate cherished traditions, and participate in communal festivities. However, without school-recognized excuses, this meaningful day becomes overshadowed by academic obligations, depriving students of the opportunity to embrace their cultural identity. By granting this time off, schools affirm the importance of cultural diversity and provide students with the chance to engage authentically with their heritage. Our petition focuses on taking the first step: Getting our towns to ACKNOWLEDGE Lunar New Year.
In recognizing Lunar New Year as an official holiday, Woodbridge would be acknowledging its diverse population and fostering inclusivity within its community. It would provide an opportunity for all residents to learn about different cultures and traditions while promoting respect and understanding among us all.
We urge local officials to consider this proposal seriously. By doing so, we can ensure that everyone feels seen and valued in their community – because every tradition matters.
Please sign this petition if you believe that Lunar New Year should be recognized as an official holiday in Woodbridge. Let's celebrate diversity together!
