Establish Legislation to Hold Bullies Accountable for Suicide

Establish Legislation to Hold Bullies Accountable for Suicide
The Issue
In honor of a life tragically lost on February 4th, 2025, we plea for justice. This isn't just a story of loss but an outcry for change. A beloved sister, driven to despair by the torment of bullying, decided to end her own life. This heartbreaking event should not become just another statistic. It needs to be a catalyst for change.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in people aged 10-24, more often than not, it is linked to experiences of bullying and harassment (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Increasingly, evidence suggests a strong link between bullying and suicide. The evidence is not anecdotal - it manifests in countless lives lost prematurely, in countless families left in mourning.
It is past time to push for a law that holds bullies accountable when their actions lead someone to suicide, particularly when hard evidence of the bullying is present. Such a law can help prevent future tragedies by sending out a clear message - bullying can have serious, even fatal, consequences and will be treated with the severity it deserves.
We ask lawmakers and policymakers statewide to come forward, acknowledge this issue, and establish legislation that recognizes the direct role of bullying in cases of suicide, ergo holding those accountable for their actions. As Nebraska is one of the last states to enact legislation holding bullies accountable for a death resulting from suicide caused by the bullying. For the lost lives, for the mourning families, for our sister who should still be with us. If not us, then who? If not now, then when?
Please, sign the petition for justice, for accountability, for change.
