Establish Legal Minimum Size Standards for Hamster Cages

Establish Legal Minimum Size Standards for Hamster Cages
The Issue
From my personal experience as a rescuer of numerous hamsters I have witnessed first hand the heartbreaking impact that undersized cages can have on these tiny creatures often resulting in permanent spinal damage, premature death and a multitude of severe health issues. Unfortunately, the removal of the recommended minimum cage sizing by RSPCA led to increased instances of suppliers, such as Pets at Home, selling cages that comprise merely a quarter of the previously advised size. Our furry friends deserve better living conditions. It is imperative to understand that a hamster's cage is its world and inadequate enclosure can lead to frequent health and psychological problems. It's time we enact legislation to set legal minimum size standards for hamster cages and the wheels that go along with them - a measure that could profoundly improve their quality of life. Let's strive to keep them safe by ensuring they have the space they need and deserve. I believe that the minimum sizing should be 100cm x 50cm x 50cm which is what was previously recommended.

There are several UK Organisations, Charities and Vets that agree on the 100cm x 50cm x 50cm minimum. These include the PDSA, the Blue Cross and Woodgreen.
There are also countries that have legal minimum cage sizing after careful consideration of studies done by exotic vets such as Germany and Switzerland and I believe the UK should follow in their footsteps.
Additional Facts ;
- Hamsters run around 9km per night (that’s over 5 miles!) but small cages do not allow for an adequate wheel meaning that many pet hamsters never get to live their life to the fullest.
- The Veterinary Association for Animal Welfare is Headquartered in Frankfurt and was established in 1985 by 150 veterinarians, also known as (TVT). They recommend the cage size should be at “minimum 100cm x 50cm x 50cm (L x W x H) which is 5000 cm2 (775 in2)”.
I strongly encourage anyone who feels as strongly about this as I do to write an email directly to RSPCA about the issue. You can email them at - enqserv@rspca.org.uk
