Establish Karachi as a separate province
The Issue
Growing up in Karachi, I've witnessed its rapid evolution into a bustling metropolis, yet it has remained administratively tied to a broader provincial structure that does not always prioritize its unique needs. As a resident of this vibrant city, I've seen firsthand the myriad challenges that stem from this situation, from infrastructure shortfalls to educational deficiencies, compounded by an evident disparity in resources allocation.
Karachi is not just a city but a critical economic engine for Pakistan, contributing around 25% to the national GDP, according to the State Bank of Pakistan. Despite this, the city's unique challenges are often overshadowed by the broader provincial agenda that doesn't address Karachi's specific issues. Currently, with over 15 million residents, Karachi's governance needs surpass the capabilities of the existing administrative framework, which often results in inefficiencies and neglected services.
The need for a new administrative structure is more critical than ever. By establishing Karachi as a separate province or administrative unit, we can ensure that the governance of the city is directly responsive to the needs of its residents, streamlining decision-making processes and enabling targeted development projects. This would facilitate a tailored approach to education, healthcare, and infrastructure, directly addressing the needs of Karachiites.
Countries around the world have seen success by structuring governance in similar ways, allowing major cities to thrive under dedicated governance. For instance, Shanghai, as a direct-controlled municipality in China, benefits from a dedicated focus on urban challenges and motorizes its development aligned with the city's specific needs.
This petition calls for the establishment of Karachi as a separate province or administrative unit to honor its uniqueness and fulfill its residents' needs by providing equitable resource distribution and focused governance. Please sign this petition to urge policymakers to take the necessary steps for a better future for Karachi, one that truly reflects the potential of its incredible human and economic resources.
