Establish Direct Transportation from Staten Island to New Jersey

The Issue

Did you know that despite the short geographic distance between Staten Island and New Jersey, there is currently no direct public transportation route to bridge this gap? That's the sad reality for many Staten Islanders. Our everyday fare involves a seemingly backward journey to St George to catch a ferry, hop onto a 1 train, then the PATH, before finally catching a NJ Transit Train to reach our end destination in New Jersey. This process is not only physically draining but also incredibly time-consuming. Those that live in an area like Mariners Harbor or Arlington can get to Elizabeth NJ faster on foot then with Public Transportation.

Current transportation structures serving Staten Island residents and people traveling to New Jersey lack efficiency, negating the benefits of residing or working in close proximity to each other. This roundabout sequence of transit modes also increases our carbon footprint and puts unnecessary pressure on other transportation lines which results in overcrowding in Manhattan. A direct bus from Staten Island to New Jersey in all three bridges would be able to solve the congestion problem in Penn Station and World Trade Center, and would reduce the amount of traffic on the Highways clearing up the Verrazano Bridge and the NY 440.

In the 21st century, when connectivity should be at our fingertips, this lack of direct connection seems preposterous. This petition is not asking for cutting-edge technology or unreasonably expensive solutions, instead, we are asking for a direct, reasonable, and efficient route that will promote connectivity, reduce unprecedented stress on commuters, and respect our time. Most SI Residents who work in NJ are often driving there as using Mass transit would take at least 3 hours as they would have to get through Manhattan. Direct Transportation from Staten Island to New Jersey should be a reality and that would allow people to get off their cars and into public transportation. The people who drive to NJ from Staten Island often crowd all three bridges collecting Staten Island and New Jersey. If we have at least one full time route crossing the Bayonne Bridge, along with one or two routes crossing the Goethals Bridge, as well as the Outerbridge.

Join us in pressing our local representatives and the Department of Transportation to recognize this issue and dedicate resources to provide a direct route between Staten Island and New Jersey. Please sign this petition to advocate for improved, direct transportation options. Let's together build better connections for a better Tomorrow.
