The Issue

I am a University of Florida student facing the exorbitant costs and hours of traveling home to New Jersey during the holidays. The lack of direct flights from Gainesville Regional Airport to major New York City area airports—John F. Kennedy (JFK), Newark Liberty (EWR), and LaGuardia (LGA)— has resulted in hours of additional travel (anywhere from 6-12 hours of travel) and significantly higher expenses. The stress of arranging and paying for Ubers to either Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), followed by expensive airfare around holidays, makes visiting family costly and, for some students, unattainable. Believe me, we students want nothing more than to choose GNV as our primary airport.

As American and Delta airlines service their known hubs ( DFW, CTL, and ATL) out of Gainesville, it is important to recognize that JFK and EWR are exceptionally large airports and that connections within these airports are more than possible. Why only go to Atlanta when the numbers prove that, behind Florida, New York residents take the #2 spot for making up the UF student body, and New Jersey takes the #3 spot? That being said, outgoing flights to NYC would not only service people making connections, but it is more than likely that more people would get to call the NYC airport their final destination upon landing.

The University of Florida is home to over 50,000 students, and the city of Gainesville has a population of over 150,000 people, some of whom hail from the NJ/NY/PA area and other northeastern locations. Opening up direct flight options is not just a benevolent solution but a necessary action to bridge the geographical gap for students, staff, and the local community. Many students go home infrequently due to the complexities and financial obstacles currently involved in travel. Offering direct flights to NYC could facilitate family reunions, reduce student stress, and improve overall mental health by maintaining family connections.

Direct flights would not only benefit students but also boost tourism and business exchanges between Gainesville and New York City. Gainesville is an emerging hub, known for its rich natural attractions and burgeoning tech scene, which would attract more visitors if accessible via direct flight. Moreover, a direct link between these locations could accelerate business and cultural exchanges, strengthening Gainesville's standing as a dynamic and connected city.

Economic evidence shows that increasing flight options can have a profound impact on a local economy. According to the U.S. Travel Association, improving air travel connections generates more job opportunities and increases access to global networks. An increase in airport traffic would open up business opportunities for local businesses in the hospitality and transport sectors.

We urgently call upon the airlines servicing Gainesville Regional Airport—regional and national carriers alike—to recognize the strong demand there is for flights to the NYC area. Establishing direct flights to major New York airports will not only serve the needs of Gainesville's residents and students but will also enhance the city's connectivity and growth prospects.
