On March 15, 2021, my precious daughter, Desaray Deann Wright, left this world under circumstances that not only tore my family apart but raised serious questions about how cases of overdose (OD) or 4-ANPP (a precursor of fentanyl) deaths are investigated. Her death was hastily ruled an overdose, a conclusion reached with disturbing speed and lack of rigor. The case was dismissed almost as soon as it began, overlooked by officials ready to accept nothing more than the simplistic narrative that her past struggles with drug dependency laid out.

Desaray's story is not an isolated incident. Many families grapple with the same overwhelming frustration and heartache when their loved ones' deaths are pigeonholed in similar desultory fashions, based on prejudices and assumptions rather than justice and truth. Our system is failing, continuously mistreating cases involving former addicts, reducing them to the file cabinets of forgotten records labeled only as "drug-related deaths.”

We need to establish Desaray's Law, a legislative measure that mandates rigorous, fair investigations into all deaths suspected of being overdoses. For families who have loved ones pass away in scenarios that potentially involve 4-ANPP or appear to be staged scenes, there should be clear procedures that aid in uncovering the truth rather than sweeping it under the proverbial rug.

Desaray’s Law should include:
- Mandatory independent reviews of overdose cases where evidence may indicate foul play.
- Comprehensive autopsy procedures and toxicological analyses by certified forensic experts.
- Development of law enforcement training programs to handle cases sensitively and thoroughly.
- Establishment of a task force to oversee and evaluate the execution of these investigations, ensuring justice and transparency.

By implementing Desaray's Law, we take a stand against the neglect of justice for individuals no longer here to speak for themselves. This law will protect other families from enduring the nightmare and upheaval we have faced — a relentless pursuit for accountability and honest investigation.
