The Issue

This year, I faced a setback when I was cut from the Varsity softball team during my junior year. However, this turn of events led me to an unexpected discovery: my love for lacrosse. Thanks to my dedicated field hockey coach who started an intramural lacrosse team, I found a sport that I genuinely love and an opportunity to channel my passion.

Lacrosse has offered me a sense of belonging, teamwork, and a newfound enthusiasm that I share with many friends who were also cut from softball or hadn't yet found their spring sport match. The positive impact this game has had on our lives is undeniable. As an intramural activity, it's provided a glimpse of what could be a thriving official team, and we had enough interest to form two teams and play against each other. Many of us are dreaming of proudly representing our school in lacrosse.

Establishing a women's lacrosse team at our high school would not only create an avenue for athletic development but also promote diversity in sports, offering more opportunities for female students to engage in athletics.

School athletic programs benefit from inclusivity and diversity. By introducing a women's lacrosse team, our school would lead by example, showing dedication to empowering students through varied sports opportunities. Lacrosse itself is a strategic, team-oriented game that combines physical fitness and quick thinking, fostering valuable life skills such as leadership, discipline, and perseverance. The sport welcomes athletes of various sizes and skill sets, fostering a sense of community and belonging among a diverse group of students.

Interestingly, lacrosse has deep roots in our local community. The Indigenous Peoples who inhabited the area now known as King William County played a form of lacrosse for recreation and to prepare warriors for battle. "An Account of the Indians in Virginia" documented the Powhatan playing a form of lacrosse in 1689.  Our local Mattaponi, Upper Mattaponi and Pamunkey tribes are all part of the Powhatan Confederacy. Incorporating the game in our school's athletic program would honor this historic connection and our county's rich history.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States. Many schools nationwide have recognized and embraced this trend, providing their students with the chance to excel in a unique and exciting field. A youth lacrosse program has been established in King William, and the students participating in that program could feed into our high school program and bring with them experience and passion for the game. It’s time for our school to join this movement. Lacrosse also provides a unique pathway for student-athletes to pursue higher education with athletic scholarships, as many colleges actively recruit players.

We are prepared to launch a fundraising committee to cover initial startup costs, such as uniforms and equipment. We are also exploring grants from USA Lacrosse, which provides equipment for new programs. Costs should be minimal as lacrosse can be played on the existing multi-purpose turf field.

We respectfully urge the school administration to establish a women's lacrosse team. It would mean so much to us students who are passionate about lacrosse and are eager to compete officially. Let's come together and support the foundation of a new team that reflects our shared love for lacrosse and desire for more inclusive school sports programs. We request a formal meeting with the Athletic Department to discuss the logistics of full varsity integration. We believe that adding lacrosse will enhance the prestige and athletic culture of King William High School.

Please sign this petition to help make our dream a reality and pave the way for future athletes at our school. Together, we can inspire change and offer more students the chance to shine on the lacrosse field.
