The Issue

Recently, I found myself amidst a desperate struggle to protect life on our University at Buffalo (UB) campus. Several geese were trapped in a walled-off area of the Governors Complex, unable to escape, and there was silence from the UB authorities until tragedy struck—one life was lost. This heart-wrenching experience propelled me to take action.

Believe it or not, our campus infrastructure at UB poses unforeseen threats to the wildlife that call our grounds home. Geese and other birds find themselves entrapped, sometimes with fatal consequences. This is not only distressing but ignites a deep sense of responsibility within us to ensure all creatures can coexist safely within our university community.

The establishment of a dedicated student advocacy group could be the very change UB needs to transform our campus into a beacon of safety and sanctuary for its wildlife. By organizing this group, we can actively address infrastructural hazards that endanger animals and birds, and work with the administration to implement wildlife-friendly solutions.

This group would aim to assess current infrastructural risks, propose modifications such as bird-safe glass or wildlife corridors, and foster a nurturing environment through awareness and education initiatives. It’s crucial to collaborate with UB's facilities management and leverage the expertise of UB staff, faculty, and students to apply practical solutions that prevent further tragedies.

We have the opportunity to lead by example and show that a harmonious relationship between human development and wildlife preservation is possible.

Join me in urging the University at Buffalo to allow the formation of this student advocacy group to make our campus safer for all wildlife. By signing this petition, you will help send a powerful message to the university administration that our campus community is committed to protecting our natural inhabitants and fostering a culture of stewardship and responsibility.
