Establish a Subsidy Program for Autonomous Vehicle Access for Epileptics

Establish a Subsidy Program for Autonomous Vehicle Access for Epileptics
The Issue
For most of my life, I've had to choose between following the rules and surviving. As someone with epilepsy, the restrictions placed on me (while well-intentioned for public safety) have often boxed me into a life I didn't want. A life dependent on others, not by choice, but by necessity. Most states enforce seizure-free periods of 3 to 12 months before a person with epilepsy can legally drive. These laws make sense from a safety standpoint, but for those of us living with the condition, they limit our freedom and capabilities. Nearly, 3 million U.S. adults have epilepsy, that’s roughly 1% of the population (cdc.gov). According to the NIH, individuals with epilepsy face higher unemployment’s rates and higher likelihood of leaving school without qualifications. So much of this is due to transportation.

I propose that the federal government establish a subsidy program for autonomous vehicle access specifically targeted at individuals with epilepsy who meet specific clinical and economic criteria. This program could take the following form:
- Direct subsidies for AV purchases or leases, enabling individuals to own or access this technology without the immense financial burden.
-AV ride credit programs with certified providers like Waymo, Cruise, etc., ensuring availability even if outright purchase isn't an option.
-Integration with existing Medicaid waiver systems or SSA return-to-work programs, bridging the gap between health policy and technological advancements.
These initiatives not only promote independence but significantly enhance the quality of life for individuals with epilepsy. Moreover, it provides a means to contribute to our society! I estimate a yearly government saving's of $36,800 when one epileptic on SSDI becomes employed.
Imagine this if employed nationally over ten years!
We all want purpose. We all want to contribute. We all want to live on our own terms. Let’s give people with epilepsy a real chance to do that.
Please, sign this petition and support a subsidy program that opens doors to independence for those living with epilepsy. Learn more at ToSpeakOnline.com
