The Issue

In June of 2022, my brother's life changed forever. At just 37 years old, a devastating motorcycle accident left him a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chest down. Our family was thrust into a world we never imagined—a world of resilience, heartbreak, intense advocacy, and uncompromising determination. Through this harrowing journey, we quickly realized that young people with catastrophic injuries like my brother must fight not only against their physical limitations but also against a healthcare system that often overlooks them.

In Olathe, Kansas, and surrounding areas, there is an urgent need for a state-of-the-art long-term care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation facility tailored specifically for young individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). While facilities exist for older adults, younger patients frequently find themselves in environments that do not meet their unique rehabilitative and emotional needs.

Every year, tens of thousands of young people in the United States sustain SCI or TBI, often resulting from accidents like my brother's, affecting not just their physical state but their social and mental well-being. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, about 17,810 new SCI cases occur each year, and motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause. The CDC reports that more than 2.5 million Americans sustain a TBI annually, with young adults being disproportionately affected.

A dedicated facility in Olathe will provide these young survivors with tailored programs for rehabilitation and emotional support, staffed by professionals trained to address their distinct challenges. Such a center would focus on cutting-edge therapies and technologies, increasing their chances of regaining independence and improving their quality of life.

Imagine a facility where young adults like my brother can work with peers who understand their struggles, where treatment is designed to foster not only recovery but also community and empowerment. We propose that local and state governments, along with healthcare providers, collaborate to fund and establish this much-needed center, ensuring that no more young lives are lost to a one-size-fits-all solution.

Please join us in advocating for this crucial resource. By signing this petition, you become a part of a movement that seeks to give hope and a fighting chance for young people living with SCI and TBI in Olathe and beyond. Let's create a world where they are seen, heard, and provided the dignified care they deserve. Sign now to support this vital cause.
