Establish a Smoke-free Environment at Stonebridge Condominiums
Establish a Smoke-free Environment at Stonebridge Condominiums
The Issue
Creating a smoke-free environment in our condominium complex is not only beneficial for our health but also aligns with the growing trend of smoke-free living areas across North America. We propose a strict no-smoking policy within the entire campus, including inside units, common areas, and smokers must be 10-12 feet away from windows and doors.
Cigarette smoke carries over 7,000 chemicals, including hundreds that are toxic and can cause cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Secondhand smoke exposure is especially dangerous as it increases the risk of heart disease, respiratory illnesses, and cancer in nonsmokers, including children and pets who reside in our community. It's crucial to protect everyone, especially those most vulnerable, from these risks by implementing a comprehensive smoke-free policy.
Many condominiums in cities across the U.S. and Canada have successfully transitioned to smoke-free campuses, proving that it is a feasible step towards a healthier living environment. A survey conducted by the American Lung Association found that 87% of respondents support policies that prohibit smoking in shared residential buildings. Transitioning to a smoke-free campus can increase property values, reduce maintenance costs, and lower fire risks.
We understand that transitioning to a smoke-free environment is not without challenges. However, implementing this policy will enhance the quality of life for all residents. We propose relevant support, including smoking cessation resources and designated smoking areas away from the living spaces, to assist residents in making this transition smoothly.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer, healthier, and more pleasant living environment in our condominium community. Together, we can create a space that respects and protects the well-being of all residents. Please sign this petition to support the establishment of a smoke-free campus in our condominium.
