Establish a National Heroes of Safety Weekend

The Issue

I would like to establish a national holiday honoring our law enforcement officers and firefighters. Every day, these brave individuals willingly put their lives at risk—not because of what they have done, but often because of the choices we as a society make. They face danger so that we don’t have to, stepping into chaos to restore order, protect lives, and serve communities with unwavering commitment. They deserve more than just our gratitude—they deserve a day that belongs to them.

These men and women stand as guardians of our safety, showing courage in the face of danger, compassion in moments of crisis, and unwavering dedication to the communities they protect. They rush toward situations others flee, often at great personal risk, and they deserve a moment in our national calendar that recognizes their service in unity and gratitude. While there are existing observances such as Peace Officers Memorial Day and Fire Prevention Week, there is no singular, dedicated national holiday weekend to jointly celebrate and reflect on the collective sacrifice and strength of these public servants.

We propose that this holiday:

• Be held annually as a three-day weekend to allow Americans the chance to gather, remember, and celebrate.

• Include community-led events, ceremonies, and education initiatives that bring citizens and first responders together in recognition.

 • Serve as a national moment of unity, respect, and appreciation for those who put their lives on the line to keep ours safe.

We ask you, as our elected and appointed leaders, to take this important step in honoring the bravery, humanity, and sacrifice of those who wear the badge and fight the flames. It is time we say, clearly and officially, that we recognize and remember them—not just in times of tragedy, but every year, with a holiday that carries the weight and pride their service deserves.
