I am a resident of Wānaka who, much like many others, see my city spiraling into a cycle of overdevelopment. In my eyes, it is clear; Wānaka has already started its descent down the corporate landslide. Shouldn't we at least ensure that we benefit from it by hosting world-renowned establishments like McDonald’s? It is not merely a plea for a fast-food outlet but a call to preserve the free capitalist market in its booming glory, amidst the transformations that Wānaka is undergoing.

The presence of McDonald's outlets in nearly 120 countries, serving about 69 million people daily (source: McDonald's Corporation), is a testament to its global appeal. By welcoming this franchise into our city, we provide an emblem of consumer choice even as we grapple with the broader consequences of growth and change.

Our plea is not just for a Big Mac on our doorstep, but a meaningful nod to the corporate ethos that has become a part of our lives. It may not curb overdevelopment, it may not reverse changes that are already underway. But it has the potential to be a silver lining to a very large, golden-arched cloud.
