Establish a Fenced-In Inclusive Playground in Miami County, KS
The Issue
As a loving parent to a lively 3-year-old boy diagnosed with level 2 Autism Spectrum Disorder in Miami County, KS, I have witnessed the unique struggles my son faces every day, especially when it comes to playtime. Amidst the spectrum of his experiences, the love for play remains constant. However, his tendency to elope makes it particularly challenging for him to play in an open playground. This is a common concern shared by many parents of children with autism.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (CDC, 2020). Many of these children, like my son, will face challenges in conventional playgrounds due to their tendency to wander off or 'elope'. The creation of a fenced-in inclusive playground in Miami County would provide a safe and enjoyable environment for these kids. They will not only be offered physical security but also a sense of acceptance and normalcy that they might not get in regular playgrounds.
The proposal aims to offer our special ones opportunities equal to those without disabilities. If we reach out to our county officials with a unified voice, our children can look forward to enjoying their childhood in spaces designed for their unique needs.
We are calling on the authorities in Miami County, KS, to take prompt, proactive measures to build a fenced-in inclusive playground. We urge you to stand with us in advocating for our special children. Please sign this petition and contribute to bringing a positive change in their lives.
