Establish a Female-Only Taxi Service for Safer Transport

The Issue

My name is Lauren and I’m a survivor of sexual assault.

On the night of Sunday the 15th of December, I became one of many victims of sexual assault by a taxi driver. This traumatising event dramatically shifted my perspective about traveling, especially returning home from events intended for enjoyment. Simply put — there's a pressing need for safer transportation for women.

Too many women are living in fear — fear that the next taxi ride might play out like my harrowing experience from that December night. We are in an era where safety measures should first and foremost prioritize the protection of vulnerable groups, and in this case, women. According to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, 35% of women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence. Frighteningly, in some countries, this percentage is up to 70%. Assaults do occur wherever and whenever, including in taxi rides as I know too well.

The solution we propose: a female-only taxi service, led by women for women. This initiative isn't about seclusion but about creating a safer space where women can feel less vulnerable at any time of the day. It is time our society stands up for its women, ensures their safety, and, most importantly, allows the freedom of movement without fear.

There previously was a project in Glasgow via the City Council that was then stoped due to men feeling that it was “sexist”. You can find articles about this topic online.

We call upon local authorities and taxi service providers to consider the creation and support of a female-only taxi-driven company. Sign this petition to join in the fight for safer transportation for women. Together, we can make a difference and provide a safer, secure environment for every woman to live fearlessly.
