Eliminate Food Waste in Ontario

Eliminate Food Waste in Ontario
The Issue
I have worked at a grocery store for almost 3 years and have unwillingly been apart of one of the biggest problem that walks our earth today. Food waste. My girlfriend and I decided to do something about it.
One day I witnessed a metro employee throw out 3 sealed microwave dinners simply because the box was damaged. When I brought it up to my manager, he said “It's the policy, I have no choice” I was outraged and looked into this problem more, specifically at my work, wondering what kind of defects are considered wasted. Turns out something as simple as packaging being dented is or missing milk tabs or even one egg being broken in the entire package is thrown out with the contents inside perfectly fine. This is unacceptable.
Food waste in grocery stores is a massive problem, 58% of food produced in Canada is WASTED. That is 35.5 MILLION TONNES. Most of that is coming from massive corporations such as Metro, Loblaws, No Frills and more. In Toronto there are over 9000 people who are homeless and starving and over 604,048 low income families (under 20k) who are struggling to put food on the table. They could be your neighbors, your friends or even your family so #ThinkB4YouThrow
The goal of this petition is to:
- BAN supermarkets from intentionally throwing out edible food regardless of the package defects.
- REQUIRE supermarkets to have a reduced section where damaged goods can be sold for a discount.
- REQUIRE supermarkets to donate a portion of unsold reduced items to local Food Banks or Homeless Shelters.
