The proposed closing of Firehouse 16 located at 5555 N. Illinois Street, in Indianapolis poses a great security concern to the residents of Butler-Tarkington and Meridian Kessler.  Our neighborhood has seen a consistent increase in public safety issues and residents believe the removal of the Firehouse will further add to this increase by removing the security offered by the proximity of the Firehouse.  The ongoing growth and sustainability of both Butler Tarkington and Meridian Kessler are dependent upon a safe community and removal of any resources, particularly first responders, puts this growth at risk.  Residents in these neighborhoods move to, and stay in, this area because of the wonderful community it offers, but removal of essential resources in an area where residents pay high property taxes but receive limited benefit from the city to live here can do nothing but harm the growth of this area.  Additionally, the removal of Firehouse 16 would leave residents without the same access they currently have to emergency medical services with advanced life support capabilities.  We ask that this proposal be reconsidered and more closely evaluated prior to moving forward.  While it is clear that Station 32 in Broadripple needs additional support we believe this must be done in a way that leaves Station 16 in tact to preserve the security of our community.
