Police Reform in the San Fernando Valley

Police Reform in the San Fernando Valley

The Issue

The police brutality experienced by people all over the United States has been a problem for too long, and WE the people of the San Fernando Valley will not stand for it. We propose a complete reform and evaluation of the police departments in the San Fernando Valley: Mission Division, Devonshire Division, Foothill Division, North Hollywood Division, Van Nuys Division, West Valley Division, and Topanga Divison. In our valley, we should dismantle the legal protection for police officers, and have a re-evaluation of those officers who have had more than 3 complaints filed about them in the past year. Our government has its own checks and balances, and we propose that the Valley Divison of the LAPD should have its own as well. The City of Los Angeles should include racial bias training for its police force, as many studies have shown that there is a definite bias against its black residents. Even though black people make up about 9% of the population, "black people are much more likely to have firearms pointed at them by police officers. They also are more likely to be detained, handcuffed and searched. At the same time, when the police search black, Latino and Native American people, they are less likely to find drugs, weapons or other contraband compared to when they search white people." -The Guardian.

Systemic change needs to happen nationwide, but first, let's see what we can do at home. We are proposing that the LAPD Valley Division implements racial bias training for every single one of its employees, and not just once, but consistently throughout the year. We are also proposing a system of checks and balances for officers who have violated constitutional rights and terrorized the people of Los Angeles, to be fired immediately. The people of the San Fernando Valley deserve to feel safe where they live, without having to worry about the consistent microaggressions that come from our police department. If you believe that we ALL deserve to feel safe and to be treated equally, then make sure to sign!
