The Issue

Growing up with Cherokee heritage, I have always been proud of my roots and the rich history of the Cherokee Tribe. The city of Ball Ground, Georgia, where I reside, carries a special and historic connection to my people. The town's very name, 'Ball Ground,' originates from the traditional stickball games played by the Cherokee and Creek tribes. These games were not mere entertainment; they were a profound part of our cultural and community life, a way to resolve disputes and solidify social ties.

Despite this deep historical connection, there is currently no public monument or marker in Ball Ground that acknowledges or honors the contributions and presence of the Cherokee. Establishing a bronze statue in Ball Ground would be a powerful symbol of respect and recognition for the Cherokee people and their legacy. It would serve as an educational tool for residents and visitors alike, fostering a deeper understanding of the area's rich cultural tapestry.

Many cities around the United States have taken steps to honor the indigenous peoples who originally inhabited their lands, helping to heal historical wounds and build bridges between communities. A bronze statue dedicated to the Cherokees would not only enrich the cultural landscape of Ball Ground but also enhance community pride and tourism, providing an economic boost to the area.

We propose that the city of Ball Ground allocate funds or partner with private donors to commission this statue. It could depict a scene from the traditional stickball game, tying directly to the town's name and heritage. Collaboration with Cherokee artists and cultural historians would ensure the monument's authenticity and respect for cultural nuances.

Let us come together to advocate for this meaningful project and ensure that future generations recognize and honor the legacy of the Cherokee people in Ball Ground, Georgia. Please sign this petition to support the erection of a bronze statue in commemoration of the Cherokee Tribe.
