Eradicate School Holiday Homework For Better Child Mental Health

Eradicate School Holiday Homework For Better Child Mental Health
The issue
Imagine the relief and joy a student feels when they finally get a break from their intensive daily school routine, only to have that relief be swallowed up by an overwhelming pile of holiday homework. This is the unfortunate reality for us, as stated in our personal experiences. School holidays, our only escape from the daily pressures of school, is ironically filled with additional weight. Regular school homework is already daunting, and yet, the school holiday homework feels even more exhaustive. It's as if it's classed like a harsh, cruel burden that can be equated to child abuse.
In a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association, almost 45% of teens say they are stressed by school pressures. Adding holiday homework to this, we cannot begin to measure the additional stress that it confers (American Psychological Association, 2014). Time set apart for relaxation and rejuvenation is being usurped by continuous academic tasks. This needs to end.
School holidays should be a time for students to recharge and recuperate; a pause on school work, not an extension of it. We need to improve the mental health of our children by safeguarding their free time during school breaks. By eliminating school holiday homework, we are protecting the inherent value of the holiday and promoting a wholesome academic experience. Let us rally together to abolish school holiday homework and honor the spirit of an actual break. Our children's mental health depends on it. Sign this petition, make a difference, and give our children the real vacation they deserve.
