Eradicate Dental Poverty for NHS Patients

The Issue

I have personally experienced significant setbacks due to the current dental system, where dentists prioritize private practice over NHS obligations. Both my mother and I have been victims of deficient NHS dental work, then, due to a sudden retirement of the dentist, been left mid work and told we will only be seen if we manage to get an emergency slot.  Of which there are only three for the whole practice. That was years ago and we have had nothing since. My mother's dentures were made too small, but she has to just carry on. Due to infections all my back teeth were pulled.  Only to find I had a hole in my cheek, but no one bothered to look properly. Now I need dentures but can't get them. This  highlights a severe gap in the level of care provided. This negligence has led to dire consequences, with many people ending up in hospitals due to inadequate treatment. Unfortunately, our experiences aren't isolated. Across Scotland, England, and Wales, many individuals suffer from dental poverty both orally and financially because they can't afford to switch to private care, despite needing essential treatments.

For far too long, dentists have wielded control over the public by selectively deciding who receives care based on economic capabilities. This imbalance where one's healthcare is determined by wealth must be addressed urgently. It is fundamentally unjust for dentists to receive remuneration for NHS work while neglecting the patients who rely on these services the most.

Tell the government we demand our taxes be used in a way that benefits us. Change the way dentists are obliged to approach NHS acceptance of patients. Bring it fully into the NHS district governance and rules

I call upon the government to update laws, eradicating loopholes, and insist dentists see NHS patients, as a legal must, in the entire island.  Creating a body to oversee Dentistry for the NHS, that has proper powers to discipline, and taking proper measures, if Dentists fail to provide adequate care for all, if it can't be brought into the NHS governance.

This abuse of the people's taxes for Dental care has gone on far too long.  Action is needed. Sign and help bring this to the Government. We deserve to have NHS Dentistry accessible to all, with no barriers.
