Equalize the gender ratio of male & female characters in Genshin & add Short Male chars!

Masalahnya

To: HoYoverse / Genshin Impact Dev Team

We, the undersigned fans and players of Genshin Impact, respectfully ask for greater gender balance and character diversity in the game — especially with the upcoming Snezhnaya region and the current Natlan region.

Currently, the roster is heavily skewed toward female characters, with a limited range of male characters in both quantity and variety. Many players — especially those who enjoy character-driven narratives, team diversity, and aesthetic customization — feel that this imbalance limits creativity and representation.

Specifically, we are requesting:

  • More male characters in future banners and regions, especially Natlan.
  • Greater variety in male character personalities and archetypes.
The introduction of a short male character model, similar in size to Klee, Nahida, or Qiqi.

This addition would enhance gameplay variety, allow for more creative storytelling, and make the world of Teyvat feel more inclusive and balanced for everyone.

This is the following breakdown of male and female characters ratio according to various aspects like elements, weapons, rarities, and body types (the Traveler doesn't count):

Model Type

Model type divided into three based on their height, Tall, Medium, and Short. First, we will see the tall characters distribution based on their gender.

  • Tall characters

There are a total of 34 tall characters. 14 of them are male, 20 of them are female. The gender ratio of tall characters is 7:10, which is nearly balanced. In percentage, 41,17% of the tall characters are male.

  • Medium characters

There are a total of 57 Medium characters besides the MC, traveler themselves. As we can see, there is a huge gap between the male & female characters where there are 37 female and only 20 male.

The percentage of Medium male is 35,08%

  • Short characters

There are in total of 10 Short characters. Of three of the model types, this is the model type category with the worst discrepancy, where there is not a single Short Male which is a male counterpart of Short Female. It is highly expected for Hoyoverse to introduce the first playable Short Male character. Basically, Short characters are 100% female. There are short male characters in this game, but they are all limited to NPCs like Timmie.

Elements

There are 7 elements in Teyvat: Anemo, Geo, Electro, Dendro, Hydro, Pyro, and Cryo. In this section, the character gender distribution based on elements will be explained one by one.

  • Anemo

There are 15 Anemo characters so far. The gender ratio for Anemo characters is nearly balanced as there are 2 male characters for every 3 female characters. If we pay attention to rarities, there is equal amount of 5-star Anemo male & female, each of them have 4, while there are only 2 male characters that are 4-star, compared to 5 4-star Anemo females. This can be considered as minor discrepancy.

  • Geo

Prior to version 4.5, there wasn't a lot of Geo characters, especially the Female Geo characters. Now, the tables turned, 4 Male Geo characters compared to 7 Female Geo characters. Gorou remains as the only 4-star Male Geo character until now.

Next up, Electro.

Of all seven elements available, Electro is considered as the element with the worst discrepancy of character distribution as it is dominated by female characters. Razor was the only Electro Male character until Cyno appeared. Cyno remains as the only 5-star Electro Male, while Ororon remains as the only Tall Electro Male. Until now, there are no Electro Male characters using Sword and Catalyst.

In the other hand, the Electro female characters have every single weapon types. Sword, Polearm, Claymore, Catalyst, and Bow.

The gender ratio of Electro characters is 4:13, which means there is only one male for every three and quarter female characters. Ineffa is the latest character in version 5 and the latest Electro character added in patch 5.8. It is unknown which weapon she will be using. This marks as the failure of gender equality in gacha games like Genshin Impact. In the next version, the game devs are expected to make more male characters, especially the Electro ones.

  • Dendro

Dendro was added in version 3. It is now currently the only element with an exactly balanced and equal gender ratio. This is the most ideal gender distribution among seven elements. There are 5 males and 5 females using Dendro. There is nothing to be worried about unless one gender dominates the other.

  • Hydro

There are 14 Hydro characters in total. 5 male and 9 female. There is moderate discrepancy of gender distribution for Hydro element and also a severe discrepancy on rarity distribution. There are only 4 of the 4-star Hydro characters, within Dahlia being added in patch 5.7. There is not a single Male Hydro characters using Bow and Polearm.

Uniquely, there is not a single Hydro Claymore user.

  • Pyro

Pyro is the element with the third worst gender discrepancy after Electro & Cryo. Prior to Inazuma, Bennett & Diluc were the only two Male Pyro characters. There are 16 Pyro characters. Only 5 of them are male. There are no Male Pyro Catalyst users.

Interestingly, Bennett remains the only Pyro Sword user until now.

  • Cryo

Cryo is the second element with the worst discrepancy of gender ratio distribution after Electro, beating Pyro with 5:13 ratio. Wriothesley remains the only 5-star Male Cryo character, while there are 9 5-star Female Cryo characters, including Aloy herself. There are no Male Cryo characters that are using Bow. In the other hand, similar to Electro counterparts, there are female characters using Bow, Sword, Claymore, Polearm, and Catalyst. Each of the 5 weapons have at least one female characters.

According to the gender ratio of 7 elements, this is the following rating of characters distribution from the least balanced to most balanced, plus the percentage of male characters in each 7 elements:

  1. Electro (4:13, 23,52% male)
  2. Cryo (5:13, 27,78% male)
  3. Pyro (5:11, 31,25% male)
  4. Geo (4:7, 36,36% male)
  5. Hydro (5:9, 35,71% male)
  6. Anemo (3:4, 42,85% male)
  7. Dendro (1:1, 50% male, 50% female)

Weapons

Most gacha games have at least 5-7 weapon types. There are 5 weapons in Genshin Impact. Sword, Polearm, Claymore, Bow, and Catalyst. This is the following character distribution based on gender & weapon type:

  • Sword

The Traveler is not included because they are the default characters, which can be either male or female. There are in total of 22 Sword characters. 8 of them are male, 14 of them are female. There are no Male Sword that use Electro nor Female Sword that use Pyro. There is a pretty huge discrepancy of 5-star sword characters where only 4 of them are male, while 10 of them are female. In the other side, there is nearly equal amount of 4-star Male & Female Sword characters, where there are 4 of them each.

  • Polearm

There are a total of 20 Polearm users. Polearm is considered having the worst discrepancy of gender distribution in Polearm users where there are only 5 of them are male. There are no Dendro and Hydro Polearm users that are male. There are also no 5-star Pyro Cryo Polearm users that are male, nor 4-star Male Electro Polearm.

  • Claymore

There are in total of 17 Claymore characters. Judging by the Claymore users comparison based on gender, the gender distribution in here is the most balanced of all.

  • Bow

There are 19 Bow users in total. 7 of them are male, while 12 of them are female. The discrepancy of character's gender in this weapon is moderate, as there is at least 1 male characters of all seven elements, except Cryo.

There is nearly equal amount of 5-star Male Bow and Female Bow, 4 males, 6 females. In the other side, there is noticeable discrepancy of 4-star Bow characters based on gender, where there's only 3 4-star Male Bows and there's 6 4-star Female Bows.

  • Catalyst

Of all of the character distributions based on the weapon users, Catalyst is the weapon with second worse discrepancy of gender distributions after Polearm as it is also heavily dominated by female. There wasn't any Male Catalyst user until the arrival of Shikanoin Heizou. There are in total of 23 Catalyst users within only 6 of them are Male, which means there are almost three times Female Catalyst than Male ones. In one side, there are at least 1 of the female catalyst using each of the 7 elements available. Anemo, Electro, Hydro, Pyro, and Cryo, all of them have at least one female characters in both rarities. In the other hand, there are no Male Catalyst users that have elements of the following: Geo, Electro, and Pyro. Only Anemo ones that have at least one Male Catalyst of both rarities.

Uniquely, Ningguang remains the only Geo Catalyst user until now. There are also no 4-star Dendro Catalyst nor 5-star Geo Catalyst.

Interestingly, Neuvillette is the strongest DPS character in SS tier as Catalyst user.

Based on the weapon's gender ratio, this is the following of rating of gender ratio from the least balanced to most balanced ones, plus the percentage of male characters in each 5 weapons:

  1. Polearm (5:15, 25% male)
  2. Catalyst (6:17, 26,09% male)
  3. Sword (4:7, 36,36% male)
  4. Bow (7:12, 36,84% male)
  5. Claymore (8:9, 47,05% male)

Rarity

Most gacha games have two type of rarities for characters, which are none other than 4-star & 5-star. There are few gacha games with rarities other than 4-star and 5-star for their characters. This is the following male & female characters comparison based on rarities:

  • 5-star

To attract the players, game developers usually make more 5-star characters than 4-star ones. This is what we called as the marketing strategy, because characters at the higher rarities are usually considered stronger than the lower ones. The following is the comparison of Male 5-star & Female 5-star characters:

There are in total of 55 5-star characters. As we can see the comparison above, the 5-star female characters outnumbered the males by twice. Version 5 is the version where 5-star male characters released the least (Only 1 of them, Kinich) and 5-star characters released the most (10 of them). The percentage of male characters that are 5-star is 32,73%

There was no other 5-star male character until the end of version 5.

  • 4-star

Characters at the lower rarity such as 4-star are usually made to give an alternative of the 5-star counterparts. They are usually cheaper and F2P friendly. The following is the comparison of 4-star characters based on the gender:

There are a total of 47 4-star characters. Just like the 5-star characters, Female 4-star characters outnumbered the male by about twice, knowing that there's only 16 4-star characters compared to 31 female characters unfortunately. The percentage of male characters that are 4-star is 34,04% which is not that different with the 5-star male characters.

By introducing more male characters to balance the overwhelming number of female characters and treating the male characters as equally good as the female characters, there will be the following benefits where the game developer teams and the players can get:

1. Broader Audience Appeal

Diverse player preferences: Some players prefer playing male characters, some female, and others look for specific character types, personalities, or designs. A more balanced gender ratio helps attract and retain a wider demographic, including underrepresented groups.
Better self-insertion and identification: Players often connect more with characters that reflect their identity or preferences. Offering both male and female characters in equal measure gives more players a chance to feel represented.

2. Richer Storytelling and Worldbuilding

More variety in character dynamics: A balanced roster allows for more nuanced relationships, backstories, and interactions between characters, avoiding repetitive tropes (e.g., overly female-dominated teams, or "token" male characters).
Avoids gender-based stereotypes: Developers can move away from shallow character writing and explore more realistic, complex portrayals of both genders.

3. Stronger Community Engagement

Reduced alienation: If a game heavily favors one gender, fans who prefer the underrepresented gender might feel ignored, leading to community discontent or criticism.
More cosplay/fan art/fanfiction potential: Balanced representation tends to inspire more varied and inclusive fan content, boosting the game’s visibility and cultural footprint.

4. Healthier Long-Term Monetization

Diverse revenue streams: Players are more likely to spend money on characters they connect with. A skewed gender ratio could limit monetization potential from half the audience.
Sustains interest across updates: With more gender diversity, players are more likely to be excited about each new character, rather than skipping banners due to lack of interest in a particular gender.

5. Positive Brand Image

Inclusive design is good PR: Showing that a game values gender diversity can reflect positively on the developers, especially in today’s socially conscious gaming culture.
Reduces backlash: It helps prevent controversies that arise from perceived bias, sexism, or exclusion in character design choices.

Thank you for your incredible work and beautiful world-building — we only hope to see Genshin Impact grow even better together.
