Equalize Rights of Pet Sitters and Foster Carers in Logan City Council
The issue
My personal journey back to happiness and joy came in the form of the innocent, non-judgmental eyes of animals. Surviving a mental breakdown and trapped within the confines of my home due to years of domestic violence, I found solace in the company of these gentle beings. As a pet sitter, these creatures brought more joy to me than I could ever imagine, giving me something precious: my life back.
Yet, I was shocked to learn that in Logan City, there is a limitation that allows only two dogs to be on a property at any one time, effectively handcuffing many pet sitters such as myself. This is a far cry from the rights enjoyed by Foster Carers, who are allowed up to nine pets. This discrepancy fails to recognize the therapeutic and rehabilitative benefits that animals afford those recovering from trauma, mental health issues, or stressful life events.
There is ample evidence showcasing the benefits of interacting with animals, especially for those facing mental health challenges. A 2012 research review in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found significant data suggesting that pets can have positive effects on human physical and mental health, helping to reduce anxiety, depression, and stress levels. It is on these grounds that I propose that the rights of Pet Sitters should be no lesser than those of Foster Carers.
I appeal to the Logan City Council to revisit this policy. By allowing Pet Sitters the same rights as Foster Carers, not only do we enhance the lives of countless animals, but we also provide a lifeline to many residents in the community who rely on these interactions for emotional sustenance.
Please join me in calling for the Logan City Council to allow up to nine pets on a residential property for Pet Sitters. Your signatures will help amplify our collective voice and bring about a policy that recognizes the invaluable role that animals play in our mental and emotional health. Please sign this petition.
