The Issue

What is the Older Adult Case study? The Older Adult Case Study is an assignment that involves nursing students going to a nursing home, being assigned to a resident, and learning about that individual’s health status in a hands-on and meaningful way. Through this process, students assess the patient’s condition, gather relevant health information, observe needs, and apply course knowledge much like a nurse would when getting to know and caring for a patient in a real clinical setting. As a dedicated student who has invested significant time and effort into completing the Older Adult Case Study, I am reaching out for your support in advocating for a fairer grading system within our academic program. Like many of my peers, I undertook this case study with utmost seriousness, pouring hours into researching, verifying information, studying course concepts, and applying critical thinking. The effort required for this case study is equivalent to preparing for an exam, yet its current grading weight does not accurately reflect the extent of work involved.

Currently, the Older Adult Case Study holds a minimum grade weighting of only 2%. This seems disproportionate compared to the level of detail, knowledge, and academic rigor demanded by the assignment. Acknowledging the true effort required, I propose that the weight of the Older Adult Case Study be increased to match that of a test grade.

Furthermore, introducing the option to drop the lowest test score would contribute greatly to a more balanced and supportive grading system. Many students encounter unique challenges that may affect performance on one particular exam, and this flexibility would help mitigate any disproportionate impact on their overall grade. Research has shown that such policies can provide a buffer for students, enhancing their academic resilience and stress management.

According to studies, balanced grading systems can improve student motivation and performance. By adjusting the weight of the Older Adult Case Study and allowing for the dropping of the lowest test score, we promote a grading structure that truly reflects students' abilities and dedication. Nursing students at IRSC put substantial time, hard work, and dedication into assignments like this, and that effort deserves to be properly recognized and reflected in the course grading structure. Let's stand together to advocate for these reasonable and fair changes. I believe that a more equitable grading policy will better represent our academic commitment and hard work. Please join me in signing this petition to create a more just and motivating educational environment for all students.
