The Issue

In the name of God, the beneficient, the Merciful

As members of the Leeds Ahlulbayt Islamic Society (ABsoc), we often find ourselves facing unnecessary challenges and disparities when compared to the Leeds Islamic Society (Isoc) within the University of Leeds. Our sacred Turbahs frequently go missing in prayer spaces, causing distress and disruption to our religious practices. Moreover, hosting our events in the Green Room is contingent upon gaining approval from Isoc, a process that should be equitable given both societies being Islamic in nature.

The University of Leeds is an institution that prides itself on inclusivity and diversity. Yet, our society does not receive the same level of responsibility for prayer spaces like the Green Room. This is not only inconvenient but undermines the principles of equal treatment and respect that the university stands for.

Having equal responsibility over these spaces will enable the ABsoc to independently plan and organize religious and cultural activities without facing biases or restrictions. It would also foster a more harmonious and respectful environment where both societies can coexist and operate autonomously. Furthermore we also wish to be a part of the decision making that comes with changes made to the prayer rooms as we are also stakeholders in this regard.

Several universities have already set a precedent by treating their various religious societies with equality and respect, thus promoting a more inclusive campus life. The University of Leeds should follow suit, ensuring that all students, regardless of their religious affiliations, have equal opportunities and resources.

We are calling on the University of Leeds's administration to grant the Leeds ABsoc the same level of responsibility and access to prayer spaces as Isoc. Doing so will not only address our grievances but also uphold the values of equality and fairness that the university cherishes.

Please sign this petition to support our cause for equal treatment and to ensure that all religious societies at the University of Leeds have the same opportunities and respect.
