Equal access to period care in prisons, It's about time of the month
The issue
Petition for a legislative and policy change to enshrine equal and equitable access to period care in all carceral spaces across NSW
We are students from the University of Sydney working on an interdisciplinary project about menstrual care in NSW women’s prisons. Our research so far suggests that access to period products remains inconsistent under current policy.
While menstrual products must be provided free of charge, there is no uniform NSW requirement that pads and tampons be openly and independently accessible across all public and private correctional facilities. The Corrective Services NSW Custodial Operations Policy and Procedures does not prescribe how products must be distributed, meaning access can depend on the practices of individual facilities and often require women to request products from staff.
