Prevent Animal Endangerment in India

Prevent Animal Endangerment in India
The Issue
Dear Environmental Secretary of India,
My name is Zoey Arjunan, and I am a student of Pathways School Noida. My parents and teachers have always told me to be compassionate to not only human beings, but animals too. However, I have noticed that while human lives and rights generally respected and well protected in India, it is not the same with for animals. I would like to call your attention to the following concerns regarding animal endangerment.
- Tigers are being constantly poached in India. Tigers are either used for clothing, traditional medicines or necklaces, even though it is illegal. 106 tigers died in 2020 due to poaching.
- Abuse and torture of stray dogs is another problem. There should be effective campaigns to control strays dog population than mercilessly abuse, torture or kill them.
- The Indian Star tortoise is listed as vulnerable, in spite of various conservation measures. It has been noted that capture of these animals for the exotic pet trade continues unabatedly.
I would like for your help to implement the following measures to prevent endangerment of these species.
- Ensure stronger animal protection laws.
- Ensure stricter punishment and fines for poachers, including capital punishments for repeat offenders.
- Create more effective campaigns to raise awareness and volunteer support.
- Ensure stronger customs and border protection to deter international trade of these animals/their products.
- Have an effective adoption/neuter campaign to control stray dog population.
I hope that you will read this petition and do everything in your power to ensure that our these animal species in the Indian subcontinent are not endangered anymore and can thrive once again.
