The Issue

Private landfill owners in St. Cloud, FL - along with others in surrounding cities - are importing coal ash from Puerto Rico to be dumped in Osceola County.

Coal ash is waste which contains arsenic, lead, mercury and other toxic metals.

Since 2017 the dumping of coal ash was banned in Puerto Rico in an effort to preserve the "life, health and general welfare of the people” via Senate Bill 81.

By singing the petition you request Osceola County residents be afforded the same “life, health and general welfare” by demanding Osceola County likewise BANS the importation of coal ash from any source outside of its own county lines.

You further demand that testing be done on the homes surrounding current dump sites to evaluate possible contamination and consequent health risks to residents.

Operations must halt immediately and indefinitely pending a physical assessment showing no adverse health risk to current Osceola County residents via coal ash contamination of their property or water within the first 10 mile radius of residential homes surrounding the dump site.

Such testing should be conducted at the expense of the private landfill owners engaging in the practice of accepting coal ash from Puerto Rico.
