Ensure women's shelter residents without status receive support
The Issue
Let it be a pair of prescription glasses that were broken by the abuser and the woman can’t see properly, or a cavity that has been lingering because the money for a dentist was refused. These things become worries on top of an already overwhelming situation.
Two years after arriving in Canada from Austria, I found myself in one of the most vulnerable situations of my life. Having fled domestic violence, I sought refuge in a women’s shelter, only to realize that my lack of official status in Canada meant that I was excluded from vital support systems. Without healthcare or financial assistance, surviving the day-to-day became an overwhelming challenge.
This issue affects numerous women like me across the country, who, through no fault of their own, find themselves living in shelters without the legal status required to receive basic aid. Our society prides itself on offering compassion and a fresh start to those in need, yet these women are left without access to essential medical care or a means to secure basic necessities. To address this pressing issue, I am calling on the Canadian government to enact policies that grant temporary medical coverage and a weekly subsistence allowance to women residing in shelters without legal status. This support is not only critical for physical and mental wellbeing, but it is also a humanitarian act that aligns with Canada's values of inclusivity and human dignity.
Statistics from the Canadian Women's Foundation show that upwards of 3,500 women and their 2,700 children sleep in shelters every night in Canada, fleeing violence. Despite this, many are forced to choose between ending abuse and facing a future without healthcare or financial independence due to their immigration status. This is not a choice anyone should have to make.
Implementing policies to support these women can include partnerships with non-profits and community health organizations that already extend interim aid to individuals without formal status. By ensuring temporary coverage and financial aid, we can help these women recover and rebuild their lives. Offering these basic necessities provides them with the stability they need to seek long-term solutions, such as securing legal status and gaining employment.
Help us urge the government to open its heart to those who have been marginalized and underserved. Sign this petition to stand with countless women who bravely step into shelters seeking safety and a chance at a new life. Together, we can make Canada a beacon of hope and healing for those who have nowhere else to turn.
