The Issue

My granddaughter has lived with Type 1 diabetes since the tender age of 3. Her life is a constant battle against this relentless disease, which imposes numerous daily challenges. From managing her blood sugar levels to ensuring she has access to the necessary medical supplies, our family knows firsthand the enduring financial strain of this condition. Yet, at the age of 16, as her Disability Living Allowance (DLA) ends, we are forced to navigate a new set of obstacles: reapplying for assistance through the Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

This transition from DLA to PIP is not just a bureaucratic formality but a critical juncture that often adds undue stress to families already stretched emotionally and financially. Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition, one that does not disappear once a child reaches 16. The need for continuous financial assistance remains imperative.

Statistics show that Type 1 diabetics incur additional yearly expenses ranging from £500 to £1,000 on necessary supplies like glucose monitors, test strips, and emergency glucagon. For many families, these costs are overwhelming. The UK government needs to recognize that the chronic nature of Type 1 diabetes should automatically qualify those affected for PIP when their DLA ends.

The current system compels families and individuals to reapply and often unnecessarily face weeks or months without critical financial support. According to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, this gap in support can lead to negative health outcomes, including increased risk for prolonged hypoglycemia and other complications due to lack of proper resources.

By ensuring an automatic transition from DLA to PIP for those with Type 1 diabetes, the government will be acknowledging the lifelong and unchanging nature of this condition. This move will provide uninterrupted financial relief and stability, allowing families to focus on managing and sustaining the health and well-being of their loved ones without additional bureaucratic hurdles.

Please join us in urging the UK government to make this vital change. Sign this petition to demand automatic PIP for individuals with Type 1 diabetes following the end of their DLA at age 16. Every signature brings us one step closer to making a positive impact on countless lives affected by this condition.
