Ensure Transparency & Representation in Somerville's New Arts Direction & Leadership

Ensure Transparency & Representation in Somerville's New Arts Direction & Leadership

The Somerville arts ecosystem embodies creativity, collaboration, and a unique blend of cultural expression that is truly unparalleled. Known as having the most artists per capita in a small city, Somerville has rightly earned its reputation as a TRUE ARTS CITY. However, this vibrant arts community currently stands at a crossroads requiring attention and action to safeguard its future.

The Somerville Arts Council plays a pivotal role in leading and nurturing our arts community. With the recent change in leadership, there is an urgent need for a transparent and inclusive process in selecting the Council’s new Executive Director. This leadership role is not just about continuing routine functions; it is about understanding the distinctiveness of Somerville's arts ecosystem, appreciating its intricate dynamics, and fostering an environment that allows creativity to thrive.

Through this petition (and letter writing campaign) we advocate for a process that actively involves arts stakeholders and the community in determining both the direction of the arts and the selection of the new leader for the Arts Council. Such inclusivity ensures that the values and needs of our diverse artists' community are heard, represented, and integrated --it also ensures the Somerville arts community will be led by the strongest possible candidate moving forward.

A cultural policy that supports and uplifts our creative community must reflect the voices of those who cultivate artistry in Somerville every day. It is vital that the new administration commits to open communication and inclusive dialogue, to continue fostering and expanding the incredible impact of our arts community as a whole.

Join fellow artists, arts supporters, and Somerville residents in calling for a fair hiring process that truly reflects the spirit and essence of Somerville's rich artistic legacy. By signing this petition, you lend your voice to our plea for a fair, open, and artist-driven leadership selection that will bolster the cultural vibrancy of Somerville for generations to come.

We also ask that supporters write a letter to Mayor Wilson asking to include the arts community in his new direction for the arts, conducting a transparent search for a new SAC Executive Director with participation from the SAC Board, and continuing the priorities that SAC and the community have worked on collaboratively for years.
